The Beginnings: From the Drawing Board to the Computer

In 1983, several dedicated engineers joined forces in Bochum to found an engineering firm and developed custom designs for clients in the mechanical engineering industry. At that time, the “ Design ” was still characterized by manual labor and time-consuming processes. As a result, CAD systems were introduced as tools to support the design processes. This laid the foundation for TEDATA GmbH’s future business model.

Focusing on CAD systems, the company began distributing these systems in Germany in collaboration with a British software manufacturer and a U.S. computer manufacturer. Customers had the option of purchasing computers that came pre-installed with CAD applications. This successful CADSales spanned nearly two decades, with the initial focus on North Rhine-Westphalia, where the customer base grew to about 100. At the same time, TEDATA was actively involved in the development of database systems, which were often created as part of long-term projects for corporate clients.

The Birth of MDESIGN: Software Innovation in Mechanical Engineering

In the late 1980s, TEDATA began to focus more intensively on developing its own software. At that time, many companies were still using their own calculation solutions. TEDATA opted for the Microsoft operating system and its use on personal computers. The software solution MDESIGN was born.

MDESIGN It offered a wide range of computational solutions for mechanical engineering, thereby setting itself apart from specialized, one-off solutions. A decisive step in supporting software development was the collaboration with IT experts from Ukraine beginning in the mid-1990s. With a focus on the software market and the increasing demands on the quality and quantity of software, other business areas and activities were increasingly phased out starting around the year 2000.

Growth and Diversification: The MDESIGN Group

Since 2002, mechanical engineers with practical experience at DriveConcepts GmbH in Dresden have been supporting the technical expertise of the MDESIGN group in the design and calculation of machine components.

The steady growth of the product line at MDESIGN led to the founding of the sales subsidiary MDESIGN in Bochum in 2005. This subsidiary focused on marketing the MDESIGN software solutions and contributed significantly to the company’s success.

Today, the MDESIGN Group—comprising TEDATA Gesellschaft für technische Informationssysteme mbH, MDESIGN Vertriebs GmbH, and DriveConcepts GmbH—operates at various locations. It employs specialists in coding and programming, a sales team for software and services, and experts in calculation and simulation. With approximately 50 employees, the MDESIGN group has achieved a leading position in the market and provides its more than 3,000 client companies in the mechanical engineering and automotive industries with digital tools and technical expertise based on current standards and guidelines.
